Interiors 2002
Doug Aitken, Interiors, 2002, three-channel video (color,
sound), eleven screens, 3 projection screens and 8 translucent
silkscreen dividers. Fractional and promised gift of Julia
Stoschek. Produced in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and
Museum, Philadelphia © 2009 Doug Aitken
As a part of my ongoing collaboration with artist Doug Aitken, I
created the soundtrack for this dramatic installation that
follows the lives of four characters: a tap dancer, an
auctioneer, a handball player, and a rapper. I developed music
to match the tempos of the visuals in each scene, and sequenced
the more organic parts of the instrumentation to fit with the
sounds. Three separate stereo music and sound mixes slowly fall
in time with one another at certain key moments in the video. As
the piece progresses, the onscreen world of each character is
more intertwined and in sync one with the other. This is
reflected through the sounds and music as well, culminating in
an intense crescendo and then falling quiet, only to begin
again. Read more about my approach to creating the soundtrack in
this
Tape Op
interview.
